PROBLEM SOLVING Okay, so maybe you have got something real to worry about or maybe there is a crisis that just couldn’t be averted. It happens. Like you, I have had direct experience with unforeseen obstacles, arguments, explosions, and plain old irritations. There is no spell in the world that can make every day smooth sailing. Life just isn’t that simple.

My friend Marian is the president of a large company. She manages more than seven hundred people brilliantly with the help of her shrewd secretary, Kate. Her worst problem, however, was her boss, the CEO, who had less than ten seconds of patience. His secretaries came and went so fast that no one could keep track of their names. Eventually the CEO realized that Kate was a gem and started to insinuate to Marian that they should share Kate. Marian knew that this could not possibly work, since Kate had more than enough to do already. Marian also knew that the minute Kate made a mistake, the CEO would fire her and they’d both lose out. This caused an enormous degree of worry for Marian, who could not find a solution to this politically sticky problem.

Eventually Marian knew that she needed clarity, for her fear and worry had clouded her brain. She cast a spell for clarity to see her way through the problem and found her solution the usual magic way—seemingly by accident.

When Marian went to a meeting in a client’s offices, she was kept waiting outside the executive suite. She decided to collect her thoughts and just sit quietly rather than use the time to work or make phone calls. Two secretaries sat near her, talking. Marian overheard the conversation and realized that the secretaries appeared to do different things. She asked them how they were organized and they explained. One was a stenographer trained to be a whiz at typing and filing, while the other was more the outer-world personality who took phone calls and arranged meetings. They worked for the three executives in the main suite. Marian was intrigued by this setup, since she could see how this might help her out. The best part of Kate was her ability to juggle Marian’s schedule and manage the constant stream of phone calls. Kate was a fine typist, but that was time-consuming. Eventually, Marian employed this same method and the CEO was placated. Just to be safe, Marian did sit down with the CEO before they started this new routine to clarify that she was in charge of hiring and firing, so that if there was a problem, he would come to her. So far the arrangement is working well.

This situation is not uncommon. Often, someone else’s behavior makes it impossible for us to get our jobs done or our goals met. This is definitely frustrating. Solutions are difficult to find when you are in a worried or panicked state. That is why spells for clarity are so useful. Once you regain your objectivity, you can see many more options.
